About
Kathy Poole
MY
MISSION:
To cure STARVING WRITER SYNDROME and help as
many
writers as possible achieve the same level of success that
I have enjoyed for many years.
MY
PHILOSOPHY:
We already have all the answers, but we need other
people to ask us the right questions.
WHAT
I'VE BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF DECADES:
-
Became a full-time
freelance writer in 1986
-
Incorporated my
business in 1988 (my accountant said it would be a tax-wise move because
I was making so much money)
-
Wrote a gazillion
or so newsletters, brochures, ads, TV commercials, manuals, speeches,
direct mail packages and you-name-it
-
Had clients ranging
from an international hotel chain and the space program to ad agencies,
small businesses and independent professionals
-
Indexed at least
250 books for big and small publishers (writing is such a left-brained
thing; indexing lets me exercise my right brain, earn even more money
and work with some great editors and authors)
-
Informally coached
a lot of other freelance writers
-
Discovered coaching
was actually a profession; took coaching classes, worked (and still do)
with a coach on my own life and business, and started coaching professionally
in 1998
-
Made more money as
a freelance writer than I originally expected or imagined
-
Relished every minute
of it all (well, almost)

WHAT I WAS UP TO BEFORE I BECAME A PROSPEROUS WRITER:
In reverse order--
-
Served as marketing
director for a psychiatric hospital, where I refined the fine art of selling
to the mentally ill (and learned a whole lot about how to market services)
-
Worked as a registered
nurse on surgical and psychiatric units
-
Instructed nurses
as an inservice educator at a Miami hospital (one of my favorite classes
was called “Dealing with the Difficult Patient”)
-
Wrote articles for
international nursing journals on topics ranging from difficult patients
(by then I was an expert) to urodynamic flow studies (trust me, you don’t
want to know)
-
Taught nurses everything
they needed to know about getting published in nursing journals, and helped
many of them succeed
-
Was a certified
CPR instructor
-
Took a lot of orders
as an editorial assistant for a big defense contractor
-
Usually held at
least two jobs at once just to make ends meet (some of those second jobs
were taxi driver, bowling alley attendant and cocktail waitress)
(back to the
top)
EDUCATIONAL STUFF:
-
Bachelor of science degree in nursing, cum laude, from the University

-
